The Culinary Experience!
Isn’t it funny that food makes more sense when it’s in its original place?
When you’re in Shanghai and you have the best soup dumpling of your life – you can get dumplings anywhere in the world, but why does it all make perfect sense there? There are a thousand ways of making sushi, but why does it taste best in Japan? I’ve had my fair share of fried chicken, but why does it hit the spot in Kentucky?
It’s the experience!
The cold climate in Shanghai, the old mother rolling the dumpling pastry by hand on the street, the smell of the pork cooking on a big open caldron sized pot with the smell of ginger, clove, cinnamon, star anise, that is enough to turn any vegetarian to its mercy.
Local dishes evolved according what produce was available, what resources they had at hand, oceans, farms, and native plants that are in season.
For me, food is not only about nourishing our bodies and testing our tastebuds; it’s about the way it makes us feel, the whole experience. From climate, preparation, tantalising our senses, creating memories, and bringing people together, making us happy.
Oversea is about all of those culinary experiences.
I often hear things like…
“Nick, you have a great outlook on food and have been to so many different places, what is that like?”
“How do you get that skin so crispy?”
“What is that ingredient and how do you use it?
“What is the weirdest thing you have tried?”
If you’ve ever pondered culinary questions like those, then this blog is for you.
I will be constantly updating with tips and tricks that I have collected from my journey cooking around the world and the talented people I have learned from. I will be sharing photos and stories about my culinary travels to bring some of those unique experiences to you.
